Philadelphia – The Drexel field hockey team fell to Temple in double overtime, 2-1, in a non-conference game held at Buckley Field. Alli Lokey took a Jamie Adams pass and dribbled around Drexel goalie Colleen McAndrew (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) and fired the game-winner five minutes into the second extra session. The win bumped Temple to 6-3 on the season while the Dragons fell to 4-5. Three of Drexel's losses have been overtime defeats.
The double-overtime goal by Lokey ended a wild 20 minutes of seven-on-seven action as the Dragons fired nine shots while the Owls took six. McAndrew made five saves in the extra sessions and did not allow a goal while defending three Temple penalty corners. The Dragons were awarded four corners in the overtimes but were unable to convert. One of the corners featured an excellent scoring opportunity as Sarah Gostomski (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) dribbled the ball inside the arc and lifted a shot that forced Hanshue to make a point-blank blocker save. Drexel defensive stalwart Casey Mouser (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) made several key plays in the first overtime to keep Lokey and the Owls from ending the game.
The game started eerily similar to the last time these teams met. Allie Lokey scored six minutes into the game to notch the game's first goal for the second straight meeting between the two teams. The game seemed to be heading to the same 1-0 ending as last season until Catherine Chiara (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) entered the game. Chiara, a Second Team All-CAA selection in 2006, made her first appearance of the season as she came on as a substitute in the second half. With less than nine minutes remaining in the game, she picked up a loose ball in front of the cage and put it past Owls' goalie Erin Hanshue to level the game at 1-1 and send the game into overtime.
For the game, Drexel outshot the Owls, 21-15, but were outcornered, 12-7. McAndrew made 11 saves in her first career double-overtime game while Hanshue halted nine Drexel shots.
Drexel will open its conference season with an afternoon game with Hofstra at Buckley Field on Sunday, Sept. 23. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
